High school students taking college classes with HCTC are also known as DUAL CREDIT STUDENTS. Dual credit students are entitled to the same college resources as all other students taking classes at HCTC such as traditional post-high school students, including all services and resources provided by HCTC Libraries:
Using physical items at the library such as checking out books will require students to have a library card. HCTC Libraries is transitioning from traditional library cards to student IDs that can also check out materials from the library.
Student IDs can be made at both library locations. Please have your student number (Peoplesoft ID) ready and come prepared to take a photo for the ID.
Dual credit students have access off-campus to digital resources provided by HCTC Libraries including databases. The databases require students to sign in using their KCTCS email address and password.
Access our collection of databases on our Research Tools tile on the library's homepage or using the Research Tools tab in this guide.
A great place to start your research is in our online library catalog. You can use the search box on the library's homepage or access the catalog from the Research Tools page. The library catalog searches print and physical items held in our libraries and digital content in our databases like scholarly and magazine articles, eBooks, and video content.
Check Your Email
It is very important for HCTC students including all dual credit students to check their email regularly. Communications from professors and official college correspondence will come to your KCTCS email. Keep track of your password and keep your log in information secure. Blackboard announcements can also be linked to your email so course updates, announcements, and deadlines may also come to your KCTCS email.
Ask Questions
If you are confused about an assignment, about course expectations, or about a college service do not be afraid to ask questions. Your instructors and college employees are always here to help.
Manage Your Time
You may find that college instructors do not track your course progress as closely as your high school instructors. You may take courses whose only deadline is the last day of the semester. This will require you to be responsible for managing your time, completing tasks and assignments on a set schedule so that you are not scrambling to complete your coursework the last week of the semester. Check email, your course in Blackboard, and read your syllabus. Keep a planner, write pre-determined deadlines on a wall calendar or set reminders in your phone.
Use the Library
The library is a great place for academic study. We also provide laptops and desktops with Internet access for student use. The library provides access to academic resources such as study materials, databases, books, multimedia content and professional staff who stand ready to assist our students with research needs or to connect you with a college staff member who can help.
