Images: Finding and Using Images on the Web

This guide provides an overview of image copyright and fair use as well as offering online sources for copyright-free or free to use images.

An image used in a research assignment counts as a source just the same as a journal, newspaper, or magazine article. As such, the image needs a citation, and if not in the public domain an attribution.

MLA:

Last name, First name of creator. “Title” or description of the image. Title of the Website, Publisher, Date of publication, URL.

APA:

Image creator’s Last name, First initial. Middle initial. (Year published). Title of image [Photograph, Cartoon, Painting, etc.]. Retrieved from URL

Chicago:

Last name, First name Middle initial of creator of image. “Title of image” or Description. Digital Image. Title of Website. Month Day, Year Published. Accessed date. URL.

Images in a Research Paper

When incorporating images or graphs into a research paper, the image will need a caption as well as reference in the text of the paper near the image. Label the image using a naming convention such as Figure 1, Graph 1, etc.

Include the image citation in the Works Cited or References page.
