Hazard Community & Technical College, Hazard Campus, Stephens Library is a selective federal depository for government documents. Publications are received in paper, microfiche, and CD-ROM. Sources include the Congressional Record, Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, and many more titles. The federal documents are organized using the Superintendent of Documents classification system, and most are circulating.

Reading Government Call Numbers

Government documents are organized differently than the rest of the library collection which uses the Library of Congress Classification Scheme or the Dewey Decimal System. Government documents are organized according to the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) Classification Scheme. A SuDoc number is read from left to right. The number LC 3. 4/2: 92 would be read by the letters LC first, which stands for the issuing library. LC stands for Library of Congress. The next section (3.) stands for the subordinate bureau within the agency (copyright office). Next (4/2:) is the number designating title. Finally the last two numbers (92) stand for the publication year (1992). A-Agriculture Department. C 3.-Census Bureau (Commerce Department). D-Defense Department. E-Energy Department. ED-Education Department. GA-General Accounting Office. GS-General Services Administration. HE-Health and Human Services Deparment. I-Interior Department. I 19.-U.S. Geological Survey (Interior Department). J-Justice Department. Ju-Judiciary. L-Labor Department. LC-Library of Congress. NAS-National Aeronautics and Space Administration. S-State Department. SI-Smithsonian Institution. T 22.-Internal Revenue Service (Treasury Department). X, Y-Congress. Y 4.-Congressional Committees.
